Pop
Buildings.

Pop Buildings is a photographic project that reinterprets twentieth-century and contemporary architecture through the visual language of Pop Art. Brutalist, constructivist, rationalist and postmodern buildings are extracted from their urban context and returned as pure visual objects — forms, colors, geometries that speak directly to the eye without cultural mediation.

This is not documentation. Not reportage. It is painting with a camera. Every shot is a manifesto: the building stops being a container of functions and becomes image, icon, silkscreen. Just as Warhol transformed Campbell's soup cans into works of art, Pop Buildings transforms concrete into color, structure into composition, anonymity into identity.

The project travels through dozens of cities — Milan, Barcelona, Tokyo, New York, Porto, Warsaw, Monaco, Rome, Hamburg, Valencia, Kyoto, Berlin — collecting buildings that the ordinary passerby walks through without seeing. Pop Buildings stops them, frames them, transforms them into mental posters that cannot be forgotten.

The world taught us to see buildings.
Pop Buildings teaches you to look at them.
For the first time.
Pop Buildings ti insegna a guardarli.
Per la prima volta.

A pop
vision.

Behind Pop Buildings is an eye trained to see what others walk through. Gianluca Rona moves through cities not as a tourist and not as a documentarian, but as a hunter of forms — searching for that perfect geometry, that grazing light, that chromatic detail that transforms an ordinary building into an extraordinary image.

The approach is instinctive and at the same time obsessive. He returns to the same building dozens of times, at different hours, in different light, in different seasons — until the image corresponds exactly to what the eye had already seen before the shot. Photography as an act of confirming a vision, not of random discovery.

His training is visual rather than technical: Warhol, Lichtenstein, Haring, but also Mondrian, Le Corbusier, Scarpa. Architecture and art speak the same language. Pop Buildings is the point where these two conversations meet.

Uno
sguardo
pop.

How a work
is born.

01 — Research
The hunt

Every building is found through years of urban exploration. Not Google Maps, not tourist guides — the city is walked street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood, until something stops you cold.

02 — Waiting
The right light

Light is not invented, it is waited for. Often the same building is revisited many times — morning, noon, sunset, clouds, sun. Only when light matches vision does the shutter click.

03 — Transformation
From building to icon

In post-production the image is pushed toward its most essential and pop version: saturated colors, sharp contrasts, tight composition. The building becomes manifesto, poster, silkscreen print.

Come nasce
un'opera.

01 — Ricerca

L'edificio diventa manifesto, poster, serigrafia.
